First performed in 1830, Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique takes the audience on a journey through the life of an artist. The entire work is permeated by the ‘idée fixe’, a melody symbolising the woman Berlioz had fallen in love with.
Arguably the first psychedelic symphony, prepare to cross fields and ballrooms before descending on an opium-fuelled trip to meet witches. Preceding this is another programmatic work, Howell’s Lamia. Based on a poem by Keats, Howell paints the story of ill-fated love between man and serpent-turned-woman in vivid orchestral colours. Opening the concert is Rossini’s iconic William Tell Overture, a story of defiance and triumph.
