Verdi Requiem

  • Durham Cathedral Durham, England, DH1 3EH United Kingdom (map)

The forces of Durham University's Orchestral and Choral Societies will join forces to present the mighty Verdi's "Requiem" in Durham Cathedral this January. With over 250 musicians, and celebrated conductor Tim Burke (Musical Director of the Royal Northern Sinfonia Chorus & Tête à Tête Opera), this performance promises to mark an absolute highlight for the year of music-making.

The evening opens with the Orchestral Society performing the overture of Rossini's "Thieving Magpie", setting the dramatic tone of the concert with its energy and veuve.

As the attention turns to the centrepiece of the evening, Verdi opens his with the somber tones of the Latin words "Requiem aeternam" hushed by the choir, shortly unfolding the fury and thunder through the movements of "Dies irae" and the Offertorium. "Sanctus" shifts the dynamic towards one of joy and excitement before the haunting sound of the "Agnus dei" emerges in its wake, with the ever-famous "Libera me" bringing a satisfying resolution following a tumultous journey. Welcoming distinguished alumni soloists and the very best talent of Durham University's musicians, this evening promises to be truly unforgettable for all.
