I Heard a Voice from Heaven

  • Durham University Student Music 40 North Bailey Durham, England, DH1 3ET United Kingdom (map)

Join Durham University Chamber Choir on a profound journey from prayer to deliverance, bringing togethe the stunning passion of Łukaszewski’s Lamentations with Howells’ awe-inspiring Requiem in Durham’s landmark venue, the Chapter House of the Cathedral.

Our Epiphany concert takes the listener on a profound journey from intense passion and lament through to the delivery of content in a programme of contemporary compositions by English, American and Polish composers.

The evening opens with the urgent tones of Pavel Łukaszewski’s “Lamentations”, a 3-part composition set to the texts of the Lamentations from the bible. Łukaszewski contrasts moments of quiet with sharp, striking harmonies to enhance the emotional vigour of the Crucifixion. Joel Thompson’s haunting “A Prayer for Deliverance” emerges in the wake of the Lamentations, but refocuses feelings of grief towards the coming of hope and salvation.

In its second half, the choir sings Howells’ “Requiem”, a unique but ever-powerful setting of the mass with interspersions of poignant psalms to enhance its message. The listener is left with the ethereal movement, “I Heard A Voice from Heaven” which transports the listener with its voice of beauty.

We are especially delighted to be welcoming Alumni of the Chamber Choir back to Durham University for this concert, joining together for a selection of the concert to celebrate 55 years of music-making.

Tickets to be released soon.
