The concert will open with their wonderful Chamber orchestra playing a range of contemporary and early 20th century pieces from across Europe.
DUPO Chamber’s performance will feature Cecelia McDowall’s Rain, Steam and Speed, based on Joseph M.W. Turner’s painting of a steam train by the same name. McDowall’s composition initially aims to convey a feel of wide, pastoral spaces before the incessant rhythmic motif representing the train enters from the horizon.
DUPO Symphony will be performing the magnificent Pictures at an Exhibition. This mammoth work is a ten movement suite, originally composed for piano by Mussorgsky and famously transformed for full symphony orchestra by Ravel. Pictures at an Exhibition is a grand staple of the symphonic repertoire, representing a tour through the paintings of architect and painter, Viktor Hartmann. From the opening stately Promenade to the expansive finale In the Capital in Kiev, Pictures at an Exhibition showcases the force of the orchestra in all of its grandeur.
