Composed in the 6th century, the Great “O” Antiphons denote an emphatic call for the arrival of Christ at Christmas. The Durham University Chamber Choir explore two settings of the ancient texts, by Polish composer Paweł Łukaszewki and popular British composer, Bob Chilcott.
The contrasting compositions explore every notion of Christmas, from a longing and desperation for the day of salvation, to a wondrous celebration of Jesus’ preconceived presence. From the thunderous chromaticism of Łukaszewski to the lyrical close harmony of Chilcott, the concert will make a powerful contemporary reflection of Advent choral music.
